Australia's News Media Bargaining Code and the global turn towards platform regulation

Governments across the world are struggling to address market dominance of technology companies through increased regulation. The Australian Federal government found itself leading in platform regulation when, 2021, it enacted News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code. furore surrounding introduction legislation, Facebook's subsequent ‘news ban’ exposed limits a regulatory model that has previously left tech industry moderate itself. In this paper, we argue Code is example global trajectory towards change, which sees governments move from reactive specific interventions around governance digital media spaces. We discuss how best measure successes failures more interventionist case study implementation Australia. More broadly consider platforms have responded, whether reform an effective for other national emulate.
